Crawfish Industry Proposal The LCFA and many industry leaders have been work tirelessly for 5 years and it appears to have paid off. We were contacted by you legislators and asked what we thought should happen with the tariff distribution in the Louisiana Crawfish Industry.
This is what we came up with
To: Louisiana Congressional Delegation
Re: Continued Dumping and Subsidy Offset Act (Byrd Amendment)
Dear Louisiana Congressional Delegation,
As you are aware, the Byrd Amendment is coming up for reinstatement under new legislation commonly referred to as “Byrd Sunrise” and we are very pleased to announce a renewed and unified vision for the Louisiana crawfish industry. The signatories of this letter would like to inform you of an agreement reached by the crawfish industry regarding the proposed Byrd Agreement and the distribution of tariff collected. After discussions, we have reached consensus on the following inclusions in your proposal for this legislation:
- Change the original wording of “original petitioners” whereby new petitioners would be eligible to receive tariff disbursements.
- Funds to be allocated evenly with 40% being allotted to all processors of crawfish tail meat and 40% among crawfish farmers and wild caught crawfishermen on processing grade crawfish.
- LDAF and Louisiana Crawfish Promotion and Research Board would receive ALL remaining funds available for distribution - to be used for the purpose of promotion of Louisiana crawfish, research and automation of the crawfish industry.
With this renewed focus and with the efforts and oversight of the entire Louisiana Congressional delegation, our eventual goal is to pursue the full collection of the tariff from this Byrd Amendment by the office of U.S. Customs & Border Protection. We ask for your support and assistance in this effort and we are certain that the above proposal is a great first step in securing these funds to benefit the entire Louisiana crawfish industry.
